A great post about language, and its idiosyncrasies, on the wildly inconsistent Thought Catalog. Worth a read.

‘Our Story in 1 Minute’: Earth History in 60 Seconds
Another superb video via io9.
You know who’s awesome? Scientists with video editing software.
So It Looks Like Warp Drives AND Tractor Beams Are Real
If scientists keep discovering things like this, pretty soon I’m going to run out of stuff to make up in my books.
Scientists Looking For Dyson Spheres, Aliens
Interesting piece at The Atlantic here about how a group of scientists are hoping to find alien life by first finding Dyson Spheres–the power sources that Freeman Dyson posited would likely power advanced civilisations.

For some reason, I found this quote really funny:
‘”More than once some inexplicable object has been discovered that looked like aliens, and then slowly it became clear that it was a very interesting, but totally natural, phenomenon,” he said. Indeed, Nikolai Kardashev once thought he’d identified several good candidates for Type III civilizations, which operate on a galactic scale. But in the end, they turned out to be quasars.’
Writing SF is making my sense of humour weird.
‘The Most Astounding Fact’
Stunning video.
Thanks, WWE.
No Post For A Week! Are You Alive, Dan?
I am! Don’t worry, dear readers. I just haven’t been posting. Lovely wife’s lovely sister came to visit us in Sao Paulo, so we’ve been busy. Took her to Rio de Janeiro for the weekend, too.

Fun times.
I’ve not been reading, and I’ve not been writing, which has limited the nuggets of bloggy inspiration somewhat. Fear not, though–at the end of this week I should be receiving a shiny, gleaming, edited copy of ASCENSION POINT back from my editor, bedecked in fancy new red lines where before there was just cliched dialogue and over-exposition. And once I get that, you can be damn sure I’ll have a blog about it.
I Was Going To Write A Post Tonight
It was going to be brilliant. Witty, erudite, informative–everything that makes a great post great.
But then I spent four hours assembling the most complicated piece of flat-packed furniture known to man. And I find I just don’t have the energy.
So here’s a video instead.
Curiosity Landing

‘Science: Dogs Can Shake 70% of the Water from Their Fur in 4 Seconds, Here’s How’
Weirdly fascinating article. You know how dogs have really loose skin? The Atlantic explains why!
I’m going to start prefixing all of my posts with ‘Science:’.
